Throwback Thursday: Santa Edition

Tis the season...for crying Santa pictures!! Not every year has been full of tears....but every year is cute, regardless of the reaction.  Let's take a look back:

Jake 2008 - 11 months old (this is a terrible shot because it was somewhere that didn't allow parents to get close to take a picture....also, I'm just noticing that there is a semi-naked lady to the left...what staff person was responsible for putting that next to Santa's workshop??):

2009: Apparently, we didn't make it to see Santa that year.  Oops.  #Parentingfail

Jake 2010 (age 2):

whoa, getting a little close there, Santa Man!  Lean back!
2011: another year of no Santa, how have I failed so much??

2012: Ok phew, we went to see him this year.  Liam was not thrilled (he would have been about 18 months old, Jake was 4):

Those pictures were at a lunch with Santa at our community center...here are some others taken a few weeks later at our friend's annual Christmas party...he seems to be much happier here!

2013, (Jake-5, Liam-2)

A few more from 2013 (at our friend's Christmas party):

 And of course, 2014 (Jake-6, Liam-3)

All aboard the Santa Express!!

On Saturday, we surprised the kids with a little trip to the Santa Express...our church was doing a fundraiser for their preschool, with a whole Santa Express theme, right down to the tickets and bells!!

The first thing we did was hop in line to see Santa...priorities peeps, mama needed a cute picture!

Liam was a bit hesitant and kept asking to get out of line...but to be honest, I'm not sure if it was actually him being nervous to meet Santa, or more because there was so much other stuff going on all around us that he wanted to get to the fun.  Either way, it wasn't an issue once I plopped him on Santa's lap...he literally did not stop talking.  And if he took a breath and poor Jake tried to jump in, Liam would just attempt to talk over top of him.  I finally had to step up and ask Liam to give Jake a turn, and he did listen...but boy was he excited to chat up the man in the big red suit!

Next up, time to climb aboard the Santa Express train!  The kids got a huge kick out of this, ringing their bells during the ride:

Some video:

Next we moved onto the bouncy house area, and then onto the games....

There was other stuff, too, like a hot chocolate bar, cookie table, balloon animals (which sadly, we didn't have time to do), a dance area, and even Anna and Elsa meet and greet.

2nd weekend of December: success!!!

O Christmas Tree!

I thought that this year with Liam being older, decorating the tree would be easier in terms of not having to worry about any ornaments breaking or the tree being pulled down on someone...

I assumed wrong.

His enthusiasm was heartwarming, but I said all of the following at least once in the hour or so it took us to decorate: "Remember to be gentle with the ornaments! Stop yanking on the branches! No...bulbs aren't for throwing! Please take that ornament off of Gracie's sweater.  Stop hanging things from the dog, please.  Don't grab that out of Jake's hand, there are a hundred other ornaments to choose from.  No, don't stick that candy cane in your mouth, it's an ornament!"

It all paid off in the end...the kids had a blast and the tree is gorgeous!!

Ta-da!!

Some of our new favorite ornaments:

Loving all the new Disney ones we got last year!  And just for fun, here's one that Jake "made" when he was about a year old, cracks me up every time I see it:

He's baaaaack!!

Spider Chippy Elf made his grand return to our home last week! Every year, Spider Chippy Elf comes to our house via a box left on the porch...the doorbell rings and bam, there he is, ready for the season!  (if I could go back in time and make him arrive in a way that is slightly less complicated than having to distract 2 kids in another part of the house while the other parent does all of that as quietly as possible, I totally would...but tradition is tradition, so it stands)

The kids had just got out of the bath the other night when all of a sudden....ding-dong!!

He came this year with a Christmas DVD for the boys (that Santa scored after Christmas last year for $1, woohoo!) and a letter that was personalized to them.  They were just beside themselves with excitement, it's so much fun to see their faces during stuff like this.

The next night after dinner, they decided that they needed to play Elf on the Shelf and save the North Pole from a terrible disaster of no Christmas spirit.  Obviously, the only cure for no Christmas spirit is to go put on your Christmas PJ's,  and then wield around some swords while rocking Elf hats.

Has your Elf arrived yet??

Thanksgiving 2014

Thanks to a dicey looking weather forecast, our Thanksgiving break was extended by 1 day last week...we were supposed to leave Wednesday afternoon, but ended up leaving around 6pm Tuesday night instead, to avoid the predicted snow mess of Wednesday.  If you are a parent, you know that driving during bedtime can be a risky choice...sometimes it's great and the kids sleep most of the way then transfer right into a bed... other times, it totally backfires and you end up with kids who think sleeping in the car was a nap, and are wide awake when you get to your destination! Fortunately, this time it worked in our favor; the kids fell asleep at their usual time around 8pm, slept for the remaining 3 hours in the car, then transferred into their beds at Nana's house.  A Thanksgiving miracle!!

We were happy with our decision to beat the snow, as they did get quite a bit the next day! Jake was chomping at the bit all day to get out and play it in, but it was coming down so hard none of us wanted to venture out until it slowed down.  Fortunately, we were able to go out around 4...Liam was hesitant at first ("I don't want to go out, it's going to be cold!"---he's totally my kid) but he came around once he saw how much fun we were all having out there :)

The kids were worn out that night and needed to get plenty of rest since the next day was TURKEY DAY!!!

I always miss my maternity pants on Thanksgiving.

We were joined by Uncle Pip, Aunt Reen and Sarah, and I think everyone enjoyed the day of relaxing, parade and football watching, board game playing, and of course, eating.

At one point, the kids got a hold of the camera and snapped some random shots of other people and wanted to take some selfies:

I don't remember what was going on here, I think some type of weird dance-off.

On Friday night, I decided it would be a good idea to introduce the kids to "Home Alone"; classic Christmas movie, right??  Jake was hesitant at first, and told me he thought it was a "big kid" movie because it has real people.  Brian and I went on and on about how funny it was, and how much he was going to love it.  Eventually, he decided he wanted to give it a try.  Time to cozy up on the couch!!

Shortly after those pictures, the smiles ended for awhile.  Poor kid was scared.to.death once the movie got rolling...scared about the robbers, scared about the one part where Kevin turns on that gangster movie...we even covered his eyes and ears during that scene and he still freaked :(  He's very sensitive, and sometimes I forget this.  In the end, he did laugh hysterically once Kevin started setting off his traps, so that was good.  But then bedtime came...and the tears came again...he did fall asleep in his own bed, but after nightmares, I ended up sleeping in bed with him.  We may be holding off on "Home Alone 2" for awhile!!

On Saturday, Christmas officially kicked off with the kids helping Nana put up her tree and decorations:

"Excellent work, everyone.  Keep it up.  I'll supervise from right here on the couch."
the finished product!!

"Hi!  My name is Gracie, and I enjoy long naps by the Christmas tree."
And here is the end result of the little tree they decorated...cracks me up!

And look at these two....cuteness overload!!!

While Liam napped that afternoon, Jake and Nana baked some cookies.  My favorite kind of cookies, to be exact....the chocolate chip kind that I don't have to have any part in producing!! :)

On Sunday, we loaded up the car and headed home....just in time to decorate our house!

We hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving!!
